Furthermore, it's not clear how to place some. Europe would of course have more than a few (fencing, for instance), but 80% are easily in the one region. The problems with this are that it concentrates too many subjects into just one region (east Asia), while leaving other regions sparsely populated. One would be to group them by their region of origin. There are many ways to organize these, none of them ideal. If there are books on "tug of war", they belong in field events as well, because apparently caber tossing belongs in that. Weightlifting would then include both competitive and training variants, along with bodybuilding (this is the same structure, just transplanted). 796.43 is "field events" like the pole vault and high jump, and there is no 796.44 or thereafter. My strong recommendation is to move weightlifting to 796.48. Even if they're not perfect, the UDC designers are worldly enough to know that softball belongs close to baseball, and rugby close to American football, etc. Most of the rest of these are fairly sensible. 9 - Winter sports (skiing and ice skating, etc) 8 - Combat sports, self-defense sports, heavy athletics, trials of strength 7 - Motoring, motorcycling (Nascar, F1, etc) 6 - Wheel sports, cycling, roller sports (bicycling primarily) 5 - Touring, walking, mountaineering, orientation sports, camping 4 - Gymnastics, acrobatics, athletics (this also has running in it in the track and field sense) 3 - Ball games (most of the sports you'd guess) 2 - Games of motion and skill with special equipment (darts, croquet) 1 - Outdoor games and recreation (hide and seek or beachballs or whatever) 0 - Philosophy of sports (ethics, kinesiology, sports science, big grab bag of shit) They've pretty much filled up 796, so I can't move those elsewhere: 796 - Sports, games, physical exercises Now, there's no reason why someone using this can't just sort the books/works better within if they feel the need, but the unrelated subjects makes this tough to do well. But worse, for this particular category they've also lumped in weightlifting (796.88) and "tug of war" (796.896). I had the basics down, but didn't have the time to make it as comprehensive as I would've liked to do. Half a year ago, give or take, I made a "rough draft" post for a modification to UDC in regards to martial arts.
